Outfest is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to build bridges among audiences, filmmakers and the entertainment industry
through the exhibition of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender themed films and videos. Having begun as a festival for gay
and lesbian film, Outfest has transformed to an organization with multiple programs aimed at serving Los Angeles' diverse
communities. In 1982, Outfest was founded on the campus of UCLA as the Gay and Lesbian Media Festival and Conference. Among
its founders is Robert Rosen, formally the Director of the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the current Dean of the UCLA
School of Theater, Film and Television. In 1985, the organization changed its name to the Los Angeles International Gay and
Lesbian Film/Video Festival, established nonprofit status, and left the UCLA campus. By 1990, the festival grew to include
115 films from 15 countries. In 1994, the event became known as Outfest: The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Following
continued success, in 1997, Outfest launched two programs in conjunction with its festival, the Outfest Achievement Awards,
created to honor notable figures in queer film, and the Outfest Screenwriting Competition (now known as the Screenwriting
Lab), established to provide support to independent queer writers. By 1998, Outfest had grown to become the largest film festival
in the Southern California area. In 1999, Outfest Wednesdays was inaugurated in collaboration with the L.A. Gay and Lesbian
Center as the first and only weekly queer film series. Outfest also produces the Screen Idol Awards, established in 2000 to
honor performances in LGBT roles, and Fusion: The Los Angeles LGBT People of Color Film Festival, inaugurated in 2004. Its
annual festival, which takes place during the summer and is the largest lesbian and gay arts event in the region, has grown
to an attendance of more than 40,000 people, with screenings of over 200 films. While the annual festival takes place at multiple
venues within the Los Angeles area, its festival headquarters is located at the Directors Guild of America. In 2005, Outfest
launched the Outfest Legacy Project in partnership with the UCLA Film & Television Archive, aimed at preserving and restoring
films with LGBT content.
