Abstract:
Subject files dating from approximately 1980 to 2020 of William A. Lester Jr., professor in the graduate school of chemistry
at the University of California, Berkeley. Files are in rough alphabetical order and are primarily related to Lester's research
in chemistry, particularly the quantum Monte Carlo method and computational chemistry, and participation in professional organizations
and symposiums. Includes files documenting Lester's participation in committees on college athletics and student body diversity
efforts, particularly in the schools of science. Also includes Lester's calendars dating from 1982-2011.

William A. Lester Jr. was born April 24, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois where he attended racially segregated elementary schools
and a desegregated high school. He recieved a masters degree in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1959 and a Ph.D.
in Chemistry from Catholic University of America in 1964, followed by a post-doctoral appointment at the University of Wisconsin
in Madison. In 1977 began directing the NRCC (National Resource for Computation in Chemistry) at Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory; he joined the University of California, Berkeley faculty in 1981. Lester's research makes use of computational
chemistry to understand the electronic structures of molecules using the Monte Carlo method. Lester is involved in college
athletics, having served as president of the Pac 10 in 2002, and is active in efforts to diversify the student body, espcially
