Abstract:
Collection includes materials on the work of the Photoelastic Research Laboratory that Polivka set up within the University
of California, Berkeley's Department of Civil Engineering and materials on Jaroslav's design of a proposed Southern Crossing
of the Bay, a toll bridge project that he designed in collaboration with Frank Lloyd Wright around 1950, which he then offered
up to Caltrans to be built. This bridge is often referred to as the "Butterfly Wing Bridge." Also included are materials other
projects that Jaroslav designed on the West Coast and in the Bay Area as well as some personal correspondence, calculations,
drawings and photographs.

Jaroslav Joseph Polivka (20 April 1886 - 9 February 1960) was a Czech structural engineer. In 1939, he immigrated to the United
States and became a research associate and lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley. He is known for his work on
photoelasticity and also for his work doing stuctural stress analysis for architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
