Abstract:
One box; letters, sheet music, speeches and photographs related to William Grant Still. The letters are written by Stills
and addressed to Adrian Michaelis, producer and programmer for the Standard Oil Company sponsored radio programs The Standard
Hour and Standard School Broadcast. Collection also includes letters to Stills written by school teachers and children telling
him how they appreciate his musical compositions. Contains two speeches written and delivered by Stills and sheet music to
"La Guiablesse," a ballet written by Still in 1927 with handwritten notation from Still presenting the music to Michaelis
in 1970. Also contains 13 black and white photographs of Stills attending an awards banquet and working in with musicians
in a recording studio. Still was a composer of nearly two hundred musical composition and is referred to as "Dean of Afro-American
composers."
