Robert Commanday received a Bachelor of Arts in music history from Harvard University in 1943. After serving as a cryptographer
during World War II and teachhing stints at Ithaca College and the University of Illinois he attended the University of California,
Berkeley and recieved his Master of Arts in musicology in 1952. He went on to teach music at Berkeley and led the university's
choral association, which included the Glee Club, which toured Japan in 1957. From 1964 to 1994 he was the critic of classical
music and dance for the San Francisco Chronicle. Commanday passed away in Oakland in 2015.
