The Yosemite Institute was founded in 1971 in cooperation with the National Park Service and the Yosemite Park and Curry Company.
The organization's first executive director was Don Rees. By 1977, the Institute was providing overnight environmental educational
programs at two campuses in Yosemite National Park (the Yosemite Campus) and in the Golden Gate National Recreational Area
(the Headlands Campus). Programs were designed to allow students and teachers to observe, study, and compare two major ecosystems.
In 1984, the Yosemite Institute changed its name to Yosemite National Institutes to reflect the extension of its work and
mission beyond Yosemite. The Olympic Park Institute in Washington state was opened in 1987. In 2009, the Yosemitie Institute
became NatureBridge, which continues to provide year-round environmental science programs at Yosemite and other locations.
Robert (Bob) Charles Hansen (born June 12, 1948 in Alameda County, California) served as Assistant Program Director of the
Yosemite Institute (1974-1977) and Yosemite Campus Director starting in 1977. He went on to serve as Santa Cruz Island Project
Director for The Nature Conservancy as as president of The Yosemite Fund, now Yosemite Conservancy. In 2014, Hansen founded
The Fund for People in Parks.
