Simone Hérault: chef and restaurateur; born 1936; died 2022; owner of French restaurant Chez Simone on Piedmont Avenue in
Oakland, Calif.
Grant, a native of Los Angeles, began his newspaper career at 17 working for the Los Angeles Examiner. He also worked as a
cartoonist during his Army duty, and later for the Milwaukee Sentinel and San Francisco Call-Bulletin. He worked as an editorial
cartoonist for the Oakland Tribune from 1954 to 1986. He won many awards during his career and was honored with a 25-year
retrospective by the Oakland Museum in 1980. The television series and character "Lou Grant" was allegedly modeled on the
cartoonist, who also worked in radio and television. Lou Grant died in 2001 at age 81.
