[Tai Tanji Kaneshiro family photograph collection]
Livingstonian
Buccaneer
Creator/Contributor:
Kaneshiro, Tai Tanji, creator, creator.
Abstract:
Family photograph collection of Tai Tanji Kaneshiro, a Japanese American woman born and raised in Livingston, Calif. Chiefly
contained in three albums, the photographs document multiple generations of Tai's family, from her parents' arrival in the
United States in the early 20th century, to her children's families in the 1960s. Highlights of the photograph albums include
Tai's family and social life of the pre-World War II years in and around Livingston, time spent in the eastern United States
in the years immediately following the war, portraits of family and friends collected throughout Tai's lifetime, and possible
associations with the Yamato Colony agricultural community of Livingston. Although Tai and her family were interned in the
Granada War Relocation Center (also known as Camp Amache) during World War II, documentation of this period of her life is
not as extensive as the periods shortly before and after her internment. Collection also includes a group portrait of Japanese
Americans at Camp Amache, dated 1946; a group portrait of Tai's Livingston High School senior class of 1936; a group portrait
of unidentified Japanese American women posing inside of a church; and a studio portrait of a young Japanese couple (all in
PIC box). Also includes Tai's yearbooks for Livingston High School (Livingstonian, 1933-1936) and Modesto Junior College (Buccaneer,
1937-1938) (all in PIC box), and a panoramic group portrait of attendees of the Young People's Christian Conference of Northern
California, October 9-11, 1936, perhaps in Oakland (G folder).
