Abstract:
Materials relating mainly to the Panama Canal that appear to have belonged to Howard A. Brett, a steam engineer working in
the Locks Division in the Canal Zone. Collection consists of a few printed items, including a copy of On the Canal Zone by
Thomas Graham Grier (1908) and a copy of Images of an Age: Panama and the Building of the Canal by Jerome D. Laval (1978).
The collection also includes a typescript report (with photographs) entitled Atlantic Locks Overhaul, 1947: Report of Safety
Engineer;" a May 1, 1953 issue of the Panama Canal Review newspaper; a booklet entitled Living and Working in the Canal Zone
(1951); a few newspaper clippings (including one from 1953 that mentions Howard Brett being fined for falsely presenting an
employee privileges card at the Corozal Army Sales Store); a Florida Police Benevolent Association card with Howard A. Brett's
name; and some photographs (three of work on the Canal and four that appear to be 1960s group portraits of the San Damiano
Retreat in Danville, California.

Howard A. Brett (1917-2014) worked as a steam engineer in the Locks Division in the Panama Canal Zone. He died in Hayward,
California in 2014.
