Title:
[Inai family photograph albums of Japanese Americans in Solano County, Calif.]
Abstract:
Photographs, chiefly adhered to disbound album leaves, documenting the middle-class Inai family of the Elmira and Vacaville
region of Solano County -- including father Kwantaro, mother Teru, and children Josephine, Helen, Julia, George and Francis
-- and their local Japanese American milieu in the decades preceding World War II. (Prior to the second world war, Vacaville
had one of the largest populations of Japanese American residents of any city in California.) Primarily snapshots, the images
chiefly depict everyday domestic activities and leisure outings. In many scenes, individuals are depicted in traditional Japanese
attire. One album seems to pertain to family members, friends and associates. Another album mostly depicts the high school
years of at least one of the Inai daughters. Collection also includes some studio portraits. Many individuals and specific
locations are unidentified.
