Abstract:
Photograph albums documenting James I. Long Sr.'s affiliation with the Hidalgo Mining Company's silver mine operations in
Chihuahua, Mexico in the 1890s and early 1900s, and multiple generations of Long family life through the 1940s. Volume 1 (1890s,
early 1900s): pertains almost exclusively to the Hidalgo Mining Company, with views of mines, mills and adjacent topography;
and the construction of lines of the Parral and Durango Railroad Company (Ferrocarril Parral Y Durango) in the vicinity of
the mining region. Volume 2 (1890s, early 1900s): pertains chiefly to various Long family members, with scenes of everyday
life in Mexico (probably Parral) and Southern California. Volume 3 (1890s, early 1900s): pertains to the city of Parral and
the Hidalgo Mining Co., depicting residences, mills and mining staff; also depicted are scenic views taken elsewhere in Mexico,
including Mexico City, Aguas Calientes, Chapultepec and Guadalajara. Volume 4 (1890s, early 1900s) pertains chiefly to the
Longs' everyday family life and leisure activities in Mexico and Southern California. Volumes 5 and 6 (1920s-1940s): chiefly
pertain to various branches of the Long family and their domestic and leisure activities, mostly in California where Long
family members had residences in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Whittier, Berkeley, San Marino, Balboa Island, Gualala, Sanger
and along the Eel River; also depicted are scenes from Tucson, Arizona. Among the many members of the Long family depicted
in the collection are James Irvin Long, Sr., R.J. Long, Carl Long, James Irvin Long, Jr., Sara Long, E.M. Long and Roy Long.
Also depicts members of Lancaster, Scott and Campbell families. Collection also includes a photocopy of James Irvin Long's
1925 typescript memoirs "Pioneering in Mexico", edited with a preface by his son John T. Long who issued the memoirs for family
members in 1942
