John Ross was born in New York City on March 11, 1938. In 1957, he moved to Mexico where he lived with an indigenous community
in Michoacán before relocating to Humboldt County, California and San Francisco. He was imprisoned for resisting the Vietnam
War-era draft, and afterwards became a community organizer. Ross was a prolific author of fiction and non-fiction, journalist,
poet, arts critic, and performance artist. For many years he was based in Mexico City as a freelance journalist. Ross died
in Lake Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, on January 17, 2011.
