Shockley, W. H., 1855-1925, creator, creator.
Abstract:
Personal intimate letters written by William H. Shockley to his fiance May Bradford just following the couple's engagement.
All but one item in the collection is dated in December 1907. At the time, Shockey was working as a mineral surveyor in Tonopah,
Nevada. In the letters, William writes of his desire to travel to Mexico with May, of his piano playing, and ask May about
her art work. He mentions traveling with her to Germany and Java, and indeed the two spent time in Europe after they were
married. There are tidbits of everyday life in Tonopah, plans for their wedding, hopes for the future, and some lines relating
to mines and work.

William H. Shockley was an American mining engineer and amateur botanist. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts and graduated
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1875. He went on to become a well-known figure in Nevada and the American
South, where he worked on mining operations alongside his brothers, Walter and George. May Bradford Shockley was the first
female in Nevada to be a U.S. Deputy Mineral Surveyor at a time when the profession was open only to men. She also became
well known as an artist in her later life. In 1910, the couple's son, William Bradford Shockely, was born in London. William
Bradford Shockley became a noted physicist and inventor and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956 for the discovery of the
