Abstract:
Photograph album chronicling the Escobar Rebellion in Mexico, 1929, chiefly the front line activities of government forces
led by General Juan Andréu Almazán in Jiménez, Reforma and elsewhere. Also includes a few views taken in 1920 of reconstruction
of a bridge damaged during the Mexican Revolution; a few combat scenes taken during an unidentified conflict, dated 1924;
and a few undated photographs of soldiers (?) posing with various machine guns. Also includes two military identification
photographs of Glodell, portraits of dancers Venezia Fraudi and Italia Fraudi (perhaps taken or collected by Glodell during
his touring of Mexico in the 1920s as a dance partner of Spanish dancer Dorita Caprano), a portrait of matador Hugo Espinosa,
and a portrait of an unidentified matador (or someone in costume as such) while mourning of the death of president-elect Álvaro
Obregón in 1928.

Album contents, received out of numerical order, rearranged and rehoused by library staff. Typescript label on original album
cover: "Escobar Revolution - 1929. Northern Front. Battles of Jiménez and Reforma". Album prints accompanied by extensive
typescript captions. Prints also bear typescript labels adhered to backs: "Presentado por J.E. Abbe, American Club, Mexico,
D. F. No se permite publicar sin su permiso." Ownership stamps, annotated by hand, on backs of album prints: "Office Chief
of of Staff, Mil. Intel. Div. War Department"; all dated May 4, 1929 (date of printing).
Other prints in collection also include hand-written captions. A few dated 1924 bear the same War Department stamps as those
in album.

Leroy Marcus Glodell (b. 1902, Hartford, Connecticut; d. 1984, Worcester, Massachusetts): worked as logger in Western Canada;
motion picture actor; touring Spanish dancer; proprietor of dance studio in Provence; served in U.S. Army for 32 years (including
deputy secretary of Inter-American Defense Board and head of Intelligence Division, Panama Canal Zone); Professor of Spanish,
Qinsigamond Community College and Assumption College; ROTC instructor, Worcester Polytechnic Institute; instructor of military
science and tactics, University of Bolivia; master castanet maker.
