Abstract:
Miscellany of photographs, chiefly copy prints, taken by C. Hart Merriam during his linguistic field work, and collected by
Robert F. Heizer. Photographs depict members of various Native American groups in California and perhaps elsewhere. Identified
tribes represented in collction include Shasta, Ole-yo-me, Polilka (Yurok), Yosemite Miwok (also Mewuk), Sho-te-ah, Room-se-en,
Cahuilla, Piute, Tah-che, Chu-chen-sy, Yokut, Wintoon, Pom-muk-ke, San Fernando, Mohave, Wipa, Wappo, Paiute (also Piute),
Klamath River, Chumash, Chemareko, Tal-lin-che and Mission Indians. Some individuals are identified. Also includes a small
number of photographs of baskets, traditional attire and other aspects of Native American material culture. Most negatives
are copies of images also reproduced in prints present in the collection. 4 negatives, on glass, are copy photographs depicting
aerial views of an unidentified archeological site, a view of Huamachuco, and a ruin from Tiahuanacu; no prints of these images
are present. Some strip negatives (NEG(strip)) contain images of books possibly pertaining to the research of Robert Heizer;
it is possible that these strip negatives were not taken by Merriam and/or do not pertain to Merriam's work.
