Lofti A. Zadeh was born in Baku, Azerbaijan on February 4, 1921. He received degrees in electrical engineering from the University
of Tehran (1942), MIT (1946), and Columbia University (1949). He joined the University of California, Berkeley Department
of Electrical Engineering in 1959, specializing in system theory and decision analysis. Later he developed the theories of
fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, which were applied internationally to many fields. Loft A. Zadeh died in Berkeley on September
3, 2017.
