William Scovil Anderson was born in Brookline, Massachusetts on September 16, 1927. After serving in the United States Army
in Korea immediately after World War II he attended Yale University (A.B., 1950; Ph.D., 1954) and King's College, Cambridge
(A.B. 1952; M.A. 1955). Anderson spent five years as an instructor at Yale, and in 1960 he accepted a position in the Classics
Department at the Universtiy of California, Berkeley. He retired as a full professor in 1994. His specialties included a
wide range of topics in literature: satire from the Roman Republic to France and Germany in the 18h Century and comedy from
Aristophanes to the 20th Century.
