Born in 1907, Albert Ulrich received a Bachelor of Science degree in plant nutrition from the University of California, Berkeley
in 1930. He received a Ph. D. in plant physiology from Berkeley in 1939, and after graduation was appointed Plant Physiologist
in the Department of Soils within the College of Agriculture. Ulrich was a pioneer in plant analysis as a diagnostic procedure
for the efficient mineral nutrition of plants. He was also acknowledged for his photographic expertise, which he applied to
his research. He continued his research after his retirement in 1975 until shortly before his death in 1994.
