Abstract:
Snapshot photograph album documenting 1938 trip of Frank Zartman and family from their home near Billings, Oklahoma, westward
across the panhandle of Texas and northeastern New Mexico, and eastward through Kansas and Missouri. The great majority of
the photographs depict events and regions associated with Native Americans in Oklahoma and New Mexico, including Perry (Otoe
people, Cherokee Strip celebration); Fairview (Cheyenne parade); Capulin Volcano; Cimarron Canyon; Sangre de Cristo Mountains;
Taos Pueblo (parade, Fiesta San Geronimo, adobe buildings); Santa Clara Pueblo; Puyé cliff dwellings; Santa Fe; Laguna Pueblo;
and Acoma. Front cover is illustrated with Zartman painting of a Native American woman carrying a large piece of pottery on
her head, with a pueblo structure in the distance. Another painting by Zartman, on one of the album leaves, depicts Capulin
Volcano. Also includes maps highlighted in pen with the routes of Zartman's travels. At least one snapshot shows the Zartman
house. Frank's daughter June appears in a few of the images. Clippings are mostly descriptive of locations visited by Zartman.
