Ben Britton Elkus was born in San Francisco, Calif. on Sept. 3, 1934. Elkus earned a Ph.D. in International Relations from
the University of Oregon. He taught school and outdoor education classes, travelled extensively, and served in the U.S. Coast
Guard as a medical corpsman. In his later years he joined the Hoedads, a treeplanting cooperative and spent the summers of
1982 to 1994 and 1996 to 1998, as a fire lookout in the Umpqua National Forest in Oregon. Elkus died on Oct. 20, 2003.
