Abstract:
Collection consists primarily of scenic landscape views in the American West. Mountains and wilderness landscapes predominate.
452 California views are present, including Mount Lassen and vicinity (34 views), Mono Lake and vicinity (109 views), Siskiyou
and Shasta Counties (68 views), Petroglyphs near Tule Lake (13 images), Yosemite National Park and vicinity (138 views), and
California missions (34 views). Other views are of scenes in Oregon (177 views, including Crater Lake and region, Klamath
River Valley, Klamath Falls, Mt. McLoughlin, Link River, Rogue River Valley, Columbia River Gorge, Hood River Valley, Oregon
desert), Arizona (8 views), Colorado (52 views, including Rocky Mountains and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River), Montana
(2 views, by Paul J. Fair), Utah (16 views including Zion Park and Bryce Canyons, Wastach Mountains), Washington (3 views),
and Wyoming (11 views, 6 or more by Paul J. Fair). Some views of birds and birds' nests are present, chiefly as examples of
various photographic papers or toners. No photographs of insects are present in this collection, although Patterson is known
to have taken such photographs, some of which were published in entomological journals.

John Elliott Patterson was a forest entomologist with the US Bureau of Entomology, an amateur ornathologist, and an amateur
photographer. He first first worked in the Pacific Northwest (1913-1929), then in California at the Berkeley Forest Insect
Laboratory. In 1950 he retired to Ashland, Oregon.
