John Oliver Simon was a poet, teacher, and translator. Born in New York City in 1942, he was active in the Free Speech Movement
while a student at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2013, he was named the River of Words Teacher of the Year by
former US Poet Laureate Robert Hass. Simon is also a noted translator, specializing in contemporary Latin American poetry.
He lived in Berkeley, California until his death in 2018.
