Abstract:
Collection includes photographs and other material used by Professor Walter William Horn to research an article on the Carson
Mansion of Eureka, Calif. Photographs depict various views of the mansion, a famous example of flamboyant Victorian architecture
built by William Carson, founder of the Dolbeer and Carson Lumber Co., also located in Eureka. Other photographs show various
operations of the lumber company, whose chief product was redwood. Aerial photographs illustrate the situation of the house
in relation to the company mill, lumber yards and wharf along the Eureka waterfront. Also included are photographs of the
Bakersfield Kiwanis Club and the Soci©♭t©♭ Anonyme Belge des P©♭troles de Kern.

According to an accompanying 1939 West Coast Lumberman article, the Dolbeer and Carson Lumber Co. -- founded 1863 -- was the
oldest redwood manufacturing company on the west coast. Its co-founder John Dolbeer invented the first steam donkey.
Walter William Horn was the first professor of art history at the Univeristy of California, Berkeley.
