Ernest Wade Collins was born in Muncie, Indiana, in 1889. After serving as a corporal in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in France
during World War I Collins moved to California. He worked as a telegrapher for the Southern Pacific Company until his retirement
in 1946. His avocations included studying the classics and California history, and writing poetry. He left his estate to the
University of California to fund scholarships for the Educational Opportunities Program. Collins died in 1975.
