Abstract:
Collection contains correspondence, contracts, bills, and other records of Piper's Opera House mainly from 1884-1898. Business
letters to Piper are from actors, theatrical agents and syndicates concerning bookings for performances at opera houses in
Nevada, chiefly the Piper Opera House in Virginia City, and others in Reno and Carson City. Many are written on illustrated
letterhead either from hotels along the circuit, or letterhead specific to the performance they were booking. Includes a small
quantity of letters from John and Edward Piper to agents and others. Also contains contracts signed by the Pipers, and miscellaneous
financial records. Promotional material includes printed circulars, handbills, playbills, tickets, and posters. Few materials
throughout the collection relate to theaters in California.

Former politician John Piper was proprietor of Piper's Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada and also was involved in running
opera houses in Carson City and Reno. He was assisted by his son Edward Piper who took charge after John's death in 1896.
