Abstract:
Consists chiefly of letters written by Captain Balch while serving as an ordnance officer on the Sioux campaign, Apr.-Dec.
1855, and later from Ft. Pickens, Fla. and Wash., D.C. A copy of Special Orders No. 12, May 12, 1855, issued by Brigadier
General W.S. Harney, preceeds the letters written by Balch to his wife. The first 14 letters, written from the St. Louis Arsenal
and in the Sioux campaign in Nebraska, May-Dec. 1855, were numbered consecutively by Balch and referred to as his journal.
These are followed by 17 letters written from Ft. Pickens in May-July 1861, and 20 letters from Washington, D.C. in July-Sept.
1862. War-time news of Washington is also given in 21 letters written by Balch's wife, Harriet (Cushman) Balch, to her mother,
Maria Jones (Tallmadge) Cushman in 1863, some which include postscripts by Captain Balch.
