Abstract:
25 volumes of minutes, service books, receipt books, descriptive books, and ledgers of the following posts of the Grand Army
of the Republic, Department of California and Nevada: Napa Post No. 192, Ellsworth Post No. 20, George H. Thomas Post No.
2, Sedgwick Post No. 17, and Mitchel Post No. 69. Of particular note are the following: the descriptive books for the George
H. Thomas Post, the Ellsworth Post and the Mitchel Post, which include member name, date, age, birthplace, residence, occupation,
service dates and details, and date of muster into the GAR. The minutes for the George H. Thomas Post in volume 19 date from
April 17, 1906, the day before the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire, and include discussion of the Post's response to the
quake and of the destruction of the Post's offices and records. Also of note are the speeches and memorials for General George
H. Thomas (1927) in the records of the George H. Thomas Post.

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army who served in the
American Civil War. The GAR was organized into "Departments" at the state level and "Posts" at the community level. There
were posts in every state in the U.S., and several posts overseas.
