Title:
[Wiel, Davis, and Metzger family photographs and memorabilia.]
Creator/Contributor:
Wiel (Family, San Francisco, Calif.), creator, creator.
Abstract:
Family portraits, snapshot photographs, photograph albums, and some memorabilia documenting the lives of various branches
of a San Francisco Jewish family. The collection centers around the families of Alvin Davis (1888-1967) and his wife Vera
Metzger Davis (1893-1988), and that of Alfred Louis Wiel (1875-1926) and his wife Fannie Strauss Kahn (1884-1965). Alvin Davis
was a son of Max Davis, co-founder of San Francisco's Davis-Schonwasser department store, and was himself a proprietor. Alvin's
wife Vera was a daughter of Leo Metzger and Rebecca Lachman, Leo at some time being in the firm founded by his father-in-law,
S. Lachman and Co., prominent in the early California wine industry. Henry Lachman, son of Samuel Lachman, purchased the Palmdale
estate, in modern Fremont, Calif. (formerly on the lands of Mission San Jose.) At his death in 1915 Palmdale became the property
of his relations Alvin and Vera Davis (his niece and her husband) and Sam Metzger (a nephew), who sold it in 1927. The Palmdale
estate is pictured in numerous family snapshots and a snapshot album (ALB v.11-12). Also of special note are cartes de visite
portraits of Samuel Lachman and family dating from the 1860s, an early 20th century copy of an 1884 photograph of the Lachman
wine warehouse in San Francisco, and various descendants of Lachman through the early 20th century (all carton 1). Also of
note are an exterior and interior view of the 19th century San Francisco Davis-Schonwasser store (carton 1), an exterior view
of the Davis-Schonwasser store on Sutter Street in the 20th century (carton 1), portraits of Davis and Metzger relations from
the 1890s onwards (carton 1), including portraits of early aviator Sam Metzger (one while piloting an biplane.) In addition
to Wiel, Kahn, Davis, Metzger, and Lachman, other related surnames present include: Strauss, Guenther, Abenheim, Baxter, Beck,
Chadwick, Whitfield, Meyer, Newbauer, and Hecht. The collection includes a number of early 20th century portraits in the pictorialist
style, including several by San Francisco woman photographers Ethel Grant Scott (Davis family files; Elsa and Vera Metzger
files, in carton 1), Ida Krajewski (Fannie Kahn file, carton 1), and Bianca Conti (Friends and family file, carton 1) and
by Arnold Genthe (Fannie Kahn file, carton 1), Johan Hagemeyer (Elsa Metzger, AX folder 5), and E. Martin Webb (Vera Metzger
file, carton 1.) 2022 additions (all in PIC box 4 except for negatives, which are in NEG carton 1) include portraits and snapshots
pertaining to Jane Davis Wiel, Marjorie Davis, Aaron Beck, Caronline Cohen, Alan Wiel, Alfred Wiel, Fannie Kahn Wiel, Stephen
Wiel and Alvin Davis; a family tree chart; a Temple Emmanu-el confirmation services program; a 1911 letter from Elsa and Eli
Wiel to Alfred and Fannie Wiel; a Buckingham & Hecht shoe factory postcard; miscellaneous negatives; and two photograph albums
depicting the exterior grounds of the Palmdale estate in 1909.
