Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, leading member of his family, the second in California, and in command of the northern frontier,
lived at Casa Grande, Sonoma, where he introduced vineyards and made the region's first wine. He later built a frame house,
called Lachryma Montis, after Casa Grande burned in 1867.
