Abstract:
First half of her autobiography, "Precious Lading," covers background on both of her parents' families (Bigelows, Shanks,
and Becks) and her childhood (first in Washington Territory and then in the Owens Valley, in eastern California), through
her marriage in 1918, including her student years at the University of California, Berkeley (Class of 1911). The second half
of her autobiography, "Prospector's Wife," is unfinished and covers the years 1918-1924.
Collection also contains: Garden diaries, 1948-50, 1952-53, 1958; Scrapbooks, 1924-1971, covering her years of residence in
several northern California communities, including Gilroy/Pacific Grove, San Francisco, Berkeley, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Sonora,
and Alameda.
Miscellaneous material consists of: a letter (ALS, including typed transcript) from her brother, Robert B. Bigelow, Berkeley,
17 June 1906, describing his arrival in Berkeley, impressions of San Francisco after the earthquake and fire, and of Berkeley,
which he describes as "the ideal place to live," and misc. items pertaining to Muriel Bigelow Hunter.
