Managed by the University of California for the U.S. Dept. of Energy, the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley is an
outgrowth of the invention of the cyclotron in 1929. The Laboratory was built in 1940. Research includes radioisotopes in
biology, medicine, agriculture and industry, and pioneering work on the atomic bomb. The Laboratory changed its name to the
Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in 1971, when its affiliate at Livermore became the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
