Winifred Van Hagen was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on November 10, 1881. She graduated from San Jose High School in 1901,
and from the Boston School of Gymnastics in 1904. She worked in public and private schools, the YWCA, and various recreation
programs before becoming Chief of the Bureau of Physical Education for Girls in the California State Department of Education.
Her tenure there lasted from 1918 to 1948. She wrote many articles and several physical education handbooks for the elementary
grades, Winifred Van Hagen died in Ojai, California, on October 24, 1968.
