Creator/Contributor:
Gatewood, Charles, creator, photographer.
Abstract:
Photographic negatives (approximately 83,000) and prints consisting of the personal archive of freelance photographer Charles
Gatewood. Includes his work from New York in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s, and his later San Francisco work, as well
as photographs taken in Stockholm and in New Orleans on annual trips to Mardi Gras. Early work includes street photography,
photojournalism, popular culture subjects, and celebrities. His erotic photography and work depicting tattoos and body modifications
and various aspects of radical sexuality are prominent. Negatives, vintage prints or later exhibit prints for many of the
images included in his books are present, such as those for "Wall Street", "Forbidden photographs", "Charles Gatewood photographs:
the body and beyond", "Sidetripping", "Primitives: tribal body art and the left-hand path", "True blood", "A complete unknown",
and "Burroughs 23", among others. Manuscript notes and personal diaries are included, as is a significant portion of Gatewood's
personal library, particularly on topics touching on body piercing, tattoos, erotic photography, or more broad topics of sex
and culture.
