Abstract:
Contains 17 handwritten letters from a man working as a saw mill worker and supervisor in the gold rush areas of Toulumne
County, California to his sisters, Lucretia and Christine, in New York state. Contents mostly concern daily pioneer life in
California and the news of the day including significant comments about the extent of crime including murders, robberies,
and hangings. In one letter, dated December 7 1854,, Hubbard describes an accident he had at a mill that resulted in a broken
hand. The letters are addressed from various locales in Tuolumne County, including Sonora, Tennessee Gulch, New England Saw
Mill, Saw Mill, Abelman [?] Mills, Mountains, and Columbia. Also includes a typescript with selected excerpts from most of
the letters.
