Abstract:
Video, clippings, fliers, legislation, meeting notes, and other materials on local housing rights activism collected by James
Tracy of Coalition on Homelessness, Right-to-a-Roof, and Eviction Defense Network. Issues include: Federal Hope VI redevelopment
in North Beach and Valencia Gardens public housing projects; ballot measures Proposition N (aka "Care Not Cash") and SFOP
Housing Bond (Prop B); tenant organizing in residential hotels, also known as Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels; and immigrants
in public housing. Also includes copies of The Civil Disobedience Handbook, edited by Tracy; and The End of Speculation and
the Strengthening of Community: Mutual Housing as One Solution in San Francisco's Homelessness and Housing Crisis by the Coalition
on Homelessness Housing Work Group. Of note is a 1996 videorecording labeled "North Beach Tenants Speak," which is raw footage
shot by Sasha McGee and Chris Daly as part of a larger project to make a documentary about Hope VI. Speakers include Juan
Prada; James Tracy; Esther Chavez of Coalition for Low-Income Housing and Immigration Housing Working Group; Richard Marquez
of Housing Not Borders; Louise Vaughn, President of Geneva Towers Tenants Association, and Malik Rahim, formerly of the Black
Panthers.

James Tracy is a San Francisco Bay Area author, poet, and activist. He co-founded Eviction Defense Network (EDN), a direct
action organization against tenant evictions, in 1992. He also coordinated Right2aRoof, a program of the Coalition on Homelessness
and a precursor to the San Francisco Community Land Trust.
