Abstract:
The red leather bound volume contains 51 prints documenting the aftermath of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire in San Francisco
and Palo Alto. The bulk of the snapshots were shot between April 19 and August 1906. Each photograph has a hand-written
caption on the page that includes information about the specific location or building. Locations include California Street,
Chinatown, Russian Hill, and Telegraph Hill. Specific buildings in the photographs are St.Mary's Church, Fairmount Hotel,
Hall of Justice, Ferry Building, St. Francis Hotel, Palace Hotel, Occidental Hotel, St. Dunstan's Hotel, City Hall, Post Office,
St. Luke's Episcopal Church, First Unitarian Church, St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church, St. Francis Roman Catholic Church,
Call Building, James Flood Building, Claus Spreckels House, Flood Mansion, Crocker Mansion, and the Boardman House. Refugees
are captured at Fort Mason and on a street cooking with a makeshift sidewalk kitchen. Photographs of Golden Gate Park include
the bandstand, Children's Playground, the observatory, De Young Museum, a U.S. Field Hospital, and a refugee camp. Photographs
of Stanford University include the Memorial Arch, Memorial Chapel, gymnasium, library, arcade, and a fraternity house. The
photographer and compiler of the album is unknown. The photographs are chiefly high quality amateur views.
